Greece Raises Alarm as Storms and Severe Weather Target Favorite Tourist Spots for UK Holidaymakers

Sunday, September 29, 2024

Greece has issued a warning to UK tourists, advising them to remain cautious as severe weather, including storms, heavy rain, and strong winds, is expected to hit several holiday hotspots in the coming days.

Starting tomorrow, intense thunderstorms and downpours are predicted to sweep across the country, with the adverse weather extending westward by Monday. Strong winds are likely to persist into the afternoon, though improvements in conditions are expected by early Tuesday morning.

Tourist-favorite locations such as Crete, Kilkis, and Thessaloniki are among the areas forecast to be most affected. Authorities have shared safety guidelines for both locals and visitors, advising people to stay indoors during the heaviest rain and avoid regions at risk of landslides or rockfalls, especially in mountainous areas like Samaria Gorge. Coastal areas are also on alert, with potential disruptions to ferries, boats, and flights due to the powerful winds.

The Greek Tourism Board is encouraging travelers to stay in close contact with their accommodation providers and tour operators for updates regarding any cancellations or changes to planned activities.

In the UK, a similar weather pattern is set to affect parts of the country, with Scotland expecting winds of up to 97 km/h on Monday, September 30, according to wxcharts.com. The highest wind speeds will likely hit areas from the northwest of Scotland down to Fort William and Glencoe. Most of England is also set to experience gusts of 50-60 km/h, with coastal regions of Wales potentially facing stronger winds.

As Greece and the UK brace for turbulent conditions, tourists and residents alike are urged to remain vigilant and take appropriate precautions.
